LARGE VICTORIAN SILVER GOBLET OF THE 76TH REGIMENT.

The silver goblets sits on three highly detailed crossed rifles with a wreath of laurel leaves on a raised circular base. The goblet is engraved, WEST OF SCOTLAND RIFFLE ASSOCIATION 1863, WON BY CAPT BLAND,76TH REGT. Silver marks for London 1862 and with makers initials for Charles Boyson. Height 22 cm. The 76TH Regiment was raised in 1787 and was originally attached to the East India company. In 1788 the Regiment was sent to India with the British army and was involved in various actions from 1791 until early 1800 and King George the 3rd authorised the Regiment to have the title, Hindoorstan for its brave service. In 1806 the Regiment returned to England, in 1807 the Regiment was transferred to Jersey in the Channel Islands for garrison duty. In 1808 it was deployed in Spain against Napoleon and took part in many campaigns and battles. In 1812 it was transferred to North America and serviced in the war of 1812 and saw action at the battle of Plattsburgh in September 1814, the Regiment stayed in North America until 1827.It was then Garrisoned in Ireland until 1834. It then served in the West Indies. The Regiment returned to England in 1842 and was soon after deployed in South Wales to suppress the riots. The Regiment was then sent to Corfu and then Malta in 1848. The Regiment then returned to England in 1857 and stayed until late 1863 when it was sent to India again (the cup would have been awarded shortly before the Regiments was sent to India).The Regiment returned to England in 1876. The 76th Regiment was amalgamated with the 33rd Regiment in 1881 to form Duke of Wellingtons Regiment. A superb large silver goblet and being named it would make a good research project. Near mint.
