CASED THIRD REICH BURGERMEISTERS MEDAL FOR THE DISTRICT OF HOCHEN.

A very rare cased medal awarded to the Mayor of Hochen, this is the 1st example of a Burgermeisters medal I have owned in 35 years as a dealer. These medals were awarded to the town's Burgermeister if the town did not already have a mayors chain of office, the medal was worn around the Mayors neck at council meetings and formal events and was worn suspended by a red silk ribbon. The large silver medal depicts the head of the Fuhrer Adolf Hitler with inscription to the outer edge, Der Fuhrer Und Reichschanzler Adolf Hitler, the revers side of the medal displays a wreath of oakleaves with large swastika and below this, GEMEINDE HOCHEN (the name of the town) and the makers mark FM, which is the makers mark for Fritz Mannheim who was the official maker of this rare award. Complete with red silk suspension ribbon and rare black leatherette box, the interior is lined in blue velvet and inset for the award and ribbon, the lid of the box features the makers trade mark FM which matches the maker mark on the award. The district of Hotchen is a part of the city of Beckbach and is in Saarland. As a direct consequence of WW1 the Saar district of Germany was occupied by England and France from 1920, mainly because its industrial potential and its coal fields, in 1935 the population voted in a land slide election to return to Germany after years of foreign rule, the population of Hochen voted over 97% in favour of re-joining Germany. The Mayor was probably selected by the NSDAP soon after that event and almost certainly from the leading NSDAP leadership of Hochen, the Burgemeisters were often Political leaders or high ranking members of the SA or the other paramilitary organizations. The Burgemeisters often held office for many years so it should be fairly easy to discover who this award belonged to and it would certainly make a fascinating research project. Near Mint.
