LATE VICTORIAN ENGLISH WALL PLAQUE OF GENERAL SIR REDVERS HENRY BULLER.

A very attractive late 1890's wall plaque depicting General Buller waring full military uniform with his military decorations. General Buller was a highly decorated officer and his awards included the country's highest bravery award, the Victoria cross. He joined the army in 1858 after purchasing an officers commission, he then served in various country's of the Empire seeing much military action, he was awarded the VC in 1879 during the Zulu wars in Africa. During the 2nd Boar War he initially served as commander in chief of the British forces in South Africa but after some military set backs he was replaced by General Roberts and he subsequently commanded the army in Natal where he did have some victories over the Boar army, he returned to England in 1900, he died in 1908. During the Boar War the British troops gave General Buller the nickname, Reverse Buller. Historians also have not been that kind to the General describing him as the bad joke of the Victorian army, there verdict being that he was an admirable Captain, an adequate Major, a barely satisfactory Colonel, and a disasterus General. No pottery manufactures marks but probably produced in Staffordshire. The size is approximately that of a large dinner plate and it is very attractive and impressive. Condition: Mint
